Iran Rejects EU Allegations, Condemns New Sanctions
WANA (Jul 17) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has strongly rejected the recent allegations made against the Islamic Republic of Iran during a European Union Council of Ministers meeting.
In response to the EU’s imposition of new sanctions on several Iranian individuals, Baghaei condemned the move as “illegal, destructive, and unjustified.”
He described the EU’s accusations of Iran supporting terrorist activities in Europe as “absurd and baseless,” asserting that certain European governments are deliberately spreading falsehoods to deflect public attention from their own systematic support for terrorism and their complicity in Israeli crimes in Gaza and the broader West Asia region.
Baghaei criticized the EU and some of its member states for imposing sanctions under “false pretexts,” while remaining silent—and even supportive—of Israel’s military aggression against Iran and the killing of Iranian citizens.
He added that the EU’s actions, based on unfounded claims and lacking any legal evidence, are “arbitrary and in violation of fundamental principles of human rights,” and warned that the governments behind these sanctions bear international legal responsibility for their actions.
Previously, the European Union on Tuesday, July 15, imposed sanctions on eight individuals and one entity, citing alleged human rights violations linked to Iran.
The EU claimed in a statement that these individuals are responsible for serious human rights violations outside Iran, acting on behalf of the Islamic Republic.
As a result of the sanctions, their assets in EU jurisdictions are frozen, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from engaging in financial transactions with them. The sanctioned individuals are also barred from entering or transiting through EU member states.
