WANA (Jan 30) – Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official statement strongly condemning the recent resolution adopted by the foreign ministers of the European Union, which levels accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran and labels the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The ministry described the move as “illegal, unjustified, and contrary to the fundamental principles of international law.”

In the statement, released on Thursday evening, the Ministry emphasized that the IRGC operates as part of Iran’s official armed forces under the country’s Constitution, and that its role in safeguarding national sovereignty, internal security, and confronting extremist and terrorist groups in the region is, from Tehran’s perspective, “undeniable.”

The statement characterizes the labeling of an official state institution as a “dangerous precedent” that could undermine the legal order governing international relations.

The statement further notes that designating official institutions of a sovereign state as terrorist entities constitutes a violation of core principles such as respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs, and could have consequences extending beyond bilateral relations between Iran and the European Union.

The Ministry described the decision as a provocative act that, in its view, calls into question the credibility and role of the EU within the international system.

Referring to the military actions of certain European countries in recent decades—particularly within the framework of Western military coalitions—the statement also criticizes what it calls Europe’s double standards in defining and addressing “terrorism,” and describes European claims of defending human rights in Iran as “lacking moral credibility.”

In the final part of the statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that responsibility for the political, legal, and security consequences of this decision will rest with European policymakers.

It added that the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with international law, reserves its right to defend its sovereignty, national security, and legitimate interests, and will place proportionate measures in response to this resolution on its agenda.
