WANA (Sep 01) – Iran has submitted a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council, condemning the recent US military strike on Larak Island in the Persian Gulf and describing it as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter.

 

In the letter sent on Monday, Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires to the United Nations, said US forces attacked Larak Island on the night of Sunday, August 30, 2026. He stated that the attack resulted in the deaths and injuries of a number of Iranian personnel and civilians, while also causing damage to public and private property.

 

Darzi said Iran strongly condemned what he described as an “illegal act of aggression,” calling it a clear violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

 

The Iranian envoy said the country’s armed forces had carried out defensive and proportionate strikes against US military bases in Jordan under the inherent right of self-defense outlined in Article 51 of the UN Charter, stating that those bases had been used in US attacks against Iran.

 

In the letter, Darzi also said that the actions of the United States and Israel, along with what he called their destabilizing measures, were the main source of threats to freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The letter linked the recent developments to what Iran described as a broader campaign that began with a large-scale military attack against Iran on February 28, 2026, followed by measures including a naval blockade, unilateral sanctions, and other actions.

 

Iran described these actions as violations of international humanitarian law and said they constitute state terrorism, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, adding that those responsible for ordering, directing, or carrying out such actions would bear international responsibility.

 

Tehran also called on the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council to take necessary measures to address what it described as a violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, ensure accountability for the use of force, and prevent further escalation of tensions threatening international peace and security.

 

The Iranian envoy urged the UN to call on the United States to immediately end actions that, according to Tehran, threaten freedom of navigation and maritime safety and security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

 

Darzi concluded by stating that Iran has exercised restraint and acted in accordance with its international obligations, but would continue taking necessary measures to protect its people, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, adding that its armed forces would respond to any military aggression in a “decisive and proportionate” manner.
