Iran Requests Emergency UN Security Council Meeting
WANA (Jun 13) – In a letter to the UN Security Council, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations condemned Israeli attacks and called for an emergency session to address what it described as the regime’s blatant aggression. The mission stated that “at the appropriate time and place, Iran will deliver a firm, proportionate, and deterrent response to these cowardly and unlawful acts.”
On Friday, June 13, Iran’s Permanent Mission submitted a formal complaint following the Israeli regime’s latest attacks against the Islamic Republic. The letter denounced the targeting of Iran’s nuclear facilities and the assassination of senior Iranian military officials.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, sent an urgent official letter to the President of the Security Council, strongly condemning the recent Israeli aggression—carried out with U.S. support—against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities and high-ranking military personnel. He urged the Council to convene an emergency meeting and to take decisive action in response to these criminal and provocative acts.
The letter reads:
“The Israeli regime, in a deliberate, unlawful, and premeditated operation, has conducted a series of coordinated military attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear centers and civilian infrastructure. These acts constitute a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law, posing a grave threat to regional and international peace and security.”
Natanz Nuclear Facility Targeted
The Iranian Mission emphasized that one of the main targets was the Natanz nuclear facility, which is fully monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“An attack on such a facility not only directly endangers the lives of Iranian civilians, but also risks triggering an irreversible radiological catastrophe in the region,” the letter stated. “A deliberate assault on safeguarded nuclear installations is a clear violation of the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Iran’s legal obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.”
State-Sponsored Terrorism
The letter further warned that these attacks undermine the global non-proliferation regime and the credibility of the IAEA’s mission, potentially setting a dangerous precedent for other actors and threatening collective international security.
It also referenced a series of targeted terrorist operations in Tehran, which resulted in the deaths of several senior military commanders and prominent nuclear scientists. These acts, the letter argued, represent “clear cases of state-sponsored terrorism.”
“The Israeli Prime Minister has openly and arrogantly claimed responsibility for these crimes, which amounts to a public confession to committing international crimes.”
Violation of Iran’s Sovereignty
The Iranian Mission asserted that Israel’s recent actions constitute a serious breach of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as a sovereign UN member state. From a legal standpoint, the letter argued, these acts are tantamount to aggression and war crimes under international humanitarian law.
“These actions represent a flagrant violation of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, which explicitly prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”
Warning of Escalation
Iran warned of the dangerous consequences of this aggression, stating: “The recent coordinated actions amount to a declaration of war against the Islamic Republic of Iran and form part of the Israeli regime’s broader pattern of unlawful and destabilizing behavior in the region. As one of the world’s most lawless and terrorist regimes, Israel has crossed all red lines. The international community must not allow these crimes to go unanswered.”
Call for UN Action
The letter urged the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General to unequivocally condemn this aggression and to take swift, firm, and binding measures to hold Israel accountable for its crimes under the UN Charter.
In conclusion, invoking Article 51 of the UN Charter, Iran reaffirmed its inherent right to self-defense:
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond to these cowardly and unlawful acts in a firm, proportionate, and deterrent manner at a time and place of its choosing. Defending its territorial integrity, its people, and its national security is a legitimate and non-negotiable right. The Israeli regime will face serious consequences for this aggression and its grave miscalculation.”
The letter concluded by calling on the Security Council to urgently convene an emergency meeting to address the full scope of this aggression and the threat it poses to global peace and security, and to hold the Israeli regime fully and effectively accountable under international law.
