Iran, Russia, China Oppose Snapback in UN Letter
WANA (Sep 01) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran, Russia, and China have sent a joint letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, stressing that countries failing to honor their obligations cannot claim the benefits of an agreement they themselves have undermined.
Araghchi wrote that the joint letter, signed in Tianjin by himself and the foreign ministers of the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation, reflects their firm position that European attempts to trigger the “snapback mechanism” lack any legal basis and constitute a politically destructive move.
He added: “By declaring the invalidity of the E3’s actions, we have officially recorded that no party can erase the sequence of events: it was the United States that first violated the JCPOA and Resolution 2231, and then Europe, instead of fulfilling its commitments, chose to align with unlawful sanctions. These undeniable facts must shape the framework of any serious dialogue at the Security Council.”
The Iranian foreign minister emphasized a core principle of international law: rights and obligations are inseparable. “Countries that fail to meet their obligations have no right to enjoy the benefits of an agreement they themselves have weakened. The credibility of multilateral diplomacy can only be preserved on this logic.”
He added, “What is at stake is not only the rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran but also the integrity and authority of international agreements. If selective compliance with obligations and abuse of legal processes is tolerated, the foundations of collective security will be gravely undermined.”
Araghchi underlined that the Security Council’s primary duty is to act on behalf of the international community to preserve global peace and security.
“The European proposal is, in fact, a betrayal of this mission, as it turns the Security Council from a guarantor of global stability into an instrument of pressure and coercion. The urgent task before us is to restore and strengthen the rule of international law so that diplomacy can find the necessary space to succeed.”
