WANA (Aug 23) – The foreign ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation stated that the three European countries lack the legal and moral competence to resort to the JCPOA dispute resolution mechanism with the aim of reimposing the previously terminated UN Security Council resolutions.

On Saturday morning, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, held a telephone conversation regarding developments related to Iran’s nuclear issue, particularly the moves by the three European countries on the eve of the legal expiry date of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, as well as cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In this conversation, it was emphasized that the three European countries, due to their failure in fulfilling their JCPOA commitments on the one hand, and their alignment with the United States in attacking Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities on the other, have committed a gross violation of Resolution 2231 and therefore lack the legal and moral competence to invoke the JCPOA dispute resolution mechanism with the aim of reinstating the annulled Security Council resolutions.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia also assessed the path ahead for nuclear negotiations and underlined the termination of Resolution 2231 on its scheduled date.

Araghchi, regarding the idea of the three European countries to extend Resolution 2231, explained Iran’s principled position and stressed that, from Iran’s perspective, decision-making on the extension of Resolution 2231 lies with the Security Council and its members.

The two sides also emphasized the continuation of interaction and consultations between Iran and Russia at various levels to better advance their common positions.
