Iran, Russia Say Positions Aligned on Nearly All International Issues
WANA (Dec 17) – Iran’s Foreign Minister said Tehran and Moscow share similar positions on almost all international issues and have consistently supported each other, stressing that bilateral relations are growing closer and more continuous.
A bilateral meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov was held in Moscow on Wednesday.
At the start of the meeting, Lavrov welcomed the Iranian delegation and referred to their busy schedule in Moscow. He also noted Araghchi’s lecture at Moscow’s MGIMO University, saying the institution is significant for many members of the Russian delegation, as several of their colleagues studied there.
Dialogue Between Iran and Russia Is Highly Valuable
Lavrov said dialogue between the foreign ministries of Iran and Russia is highly valuable. He added that it is particularly important that the two sides are holding their fifth meeting in 2025, describing the frequency of contacts as a sign of strong interest and close coordination between the two foreign ministries.

Signing of a Historic Document
Lavrov announced that the two sides would sign a historic document on Wednesday, saying that for the first time, a consultative program between the foreign ministries of Iran and Russia for 2026–2028 would be signed.
He noted that the cornerstone of bilateral relations remains the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Iran and Russia, which has already been signed and implemented. According to Lavrov, the treaty formalizes the special nature of relations between the two countries and outlines a 20-year roadmap and outlook for cooperation.
Consultations on Iran’s Nuclear Program
Referring to recent talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Turkmenistan, Lavrov said the two leaders met in Ashgabat days earlier and discussed tasks and objectives stemming from the treaty.
He added that the current meeting provides an opportunity to define the role of the two foreign ministries in implementing those goals.

Lavrov said discussions would also cover regional and international issues, including the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, developments in the Middle East—particularly Palestine—and other topics, with the aim of enhancing coordination.
Consultations Have Always Continued
Araghchi thanked Lavrov for the invitation to visit Moscow, saying consultations between the two countries have always continued on a regular and very close basis at all levels.
He noted that over the past year and a half, the presidents of Iran and Russia have met five times, while the two foreign ministers have also held numerous meetings.
He described Iran-Russia relations as comprehensive and multidimensional, encompassing political, economic, cultural, defense, and security fields.

He said Wednesday’s talks offer an opportunity to examine details and enhance coordination, as well as to discuss major regional and international issues.
Iran-Russia Relations Growing Closer
“The good news is that we have similar positions on almost all international issues, and we have consistently supported each other,” Araghchi said.
He added that relations between Iran and Russia are becoming closer and more cohesive every day, expressing appreciation for Russia’s stance in condemning what he described as U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran, as well as Moscow’s declaration of solidarity with the Iranian people. He stressed the need for continued consultations on future developments.
