WANA (Aug 20) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the escalation of US economic and trade sanctions against Iran, stressing that Tehran remains determined to defend its national security and interests in the face of US military, economic, political and psychological pressure.

 

In a statement issued on the anniversary of the August 19, 1953 coup, Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the latest US sanctions as a continuation of what it called a decades-long policy of pressure against Iran. The statement characterized the new measures as “illegal and inhumane,” arguing that they are part of Washington’s broader approach to exerting pressure on the Iranian people.

 

The ministry said the US sanctions, which affect the rights and economic well-being of Iranian citizens, constitute what Tehran considers “economic terrorism” and “crimes against humanity,” adding that responsibility for their consequences rests with the US government and those who design and implement the policy.

 

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also linked the latest sanctions to the pressure imposed on Iran following the wars of the past year and a half, stressing that, in Tehran’s view, such measures would not weaken Iran’s determination to safeguard its independence, national sovereignty and interests.

 

The ministry further warned that the combination of economic pressure and military action could have consequences extending beyond bilateral relations between Iran and the United States, arguing that continued such policies could undermine fundamental norms of the international system and the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for national sovereignty.

 

The Foreign Ministry concluded by emphasizing that, drawing on Iran’s national capabilities and decades of experience confronting US pressure, intervention and military actions, the Islamic Republic would use all available tools and capacities to protect its national security and interests.
