Iran Seeks Lasting Peace in the Caucasus
WANA (Aug 19) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a joint meeting of high-ranking delegations from Iran and Armenia, emphasized the necessity of considering the concerns and observations of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding recent regional developments, including the memorandum of understanding recently signed between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States.
At the meeting, held on Tuesday at noon, Pezeshkian described the decision to continue the friendly relations between the two countries as a serious commitment of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government, and announced Tehran’s readiness to expedite the finalization and signing of a long-term strategic cooperation program.
The president further stated that relations and cooperation between Iran and Armenia are developing in all areas, stressing the need for increased exchanges and consultations between the officials of the two countries to resolve obstacles and problems in achieving set goals and implementing signed documents.
Pezeshkian added: “The deep historical, cultural, and civilizational commonalities between Iran and Armenia provide a very favorable ground for further strengthening cooperation between Tehran and Yerevan, based on efforts to secure mutual interests.”
He reiterated Iran’s position on the latest regional shifts, saying: “Iran’s concerns and considerations must be respected, particularly regarding the recent memorandum signed between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States. Iran has always sought stability and peace in the Caucasus, and will continue to do so.”
Pashinyan: Iran’s considerations will be respected in the new corridor
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, in turn, expressed satisfaction with the visit of Dr. Pezeshkian and his accompanying delegation, noting that Armenia has always been and will remain committed to preserving its friendly and historic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Pashinyan underlined that Iran and Armenia have diverse and complementary capacities that must be utilized to serve the interests of both nations.

He further stressed the particular importance of the shared border with the Islamic Republic of Iran for Armenia, saying: “Cooperation with Iran, under the principle of good neighborliness and the enhancement of friendly ties, is of strategic importance for Armenia, and without a doubt Iran’s considerations will be respected in the construction of the new corridor.”
The Armenian premier also confirmed: “Armenia is ready to sign the long-term strategic cooperation document between the two countries.”
Araghchi: Strategic cooperation document to be finalized soon
Following the Iran-Armenia summit, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the negotiations had been serious and constructive.
“We had very serious discussions,” Araghchi stated, “both regarding bilateral cooperation in the economic sphere, which is very broad and includes trade, investment, and the implementation of technical and engineering projects, and also in cultural cooperation, which is also extensive due to the cultural ties between the two nations.”
He explained that detailed clarifications were provided by the Armenian side concerning transit routes and the recent talks held in Washington. According to Araghchi, assurances were given that Armenia is fully aware of Iran’s red lines, will continue to respect them, and will never allow its territory to be used for threats against Iran.
“It was agreed that a comprehensive strategic cooperation document between the two countries will soon be finalized,” the Iranian foreign minister concluded.
