Iran Sends 100 Tons of Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan
WANA (Sep 06) – Iran has dispatched more than 100 tons of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan following the devastating earthquake in the country’s east, which has killed and injured thousands, the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) announced.
Razieh Alishavandi, Deputy for International Affairs and Humanitarian Law of the IRCS, said that the aid was sent in response to an urgent request from the Afghan Red Crescent and after coordination between the two national societies, with support from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She explained that the assistance is being delivered in two separate shipments: a land convoy coordinated by the Relief and Rescue Organization and the Khorasan Razavi Red Crescent through the Dogharoon border crossing to Herat, and an airlift to Kabul, dispatched at the request of the Afghan Red Crescent.
According to Alishavandi, the supplies include food, tents, blankets, clothing, and other essential items for emergency shelter and relief. “The Iranian Red Crescent has always stood by nations facing humanitarian crises, and in this tragic incident too, we remain alongside the resilient people of Afghanistan,” she said.
Separately, Brigadier General Hamid Vahedi, Commander of Iran’s Air Force, confirmed that a military transport aircraft carrying relief, food, and medical supplies was dispatched to Afghanistan. “Helping those in need is both a human and moral duty,” he said, adding that the Air Force is ready to respond swiftly wherever assistance is required in Iran or neighboring countries.
Vahedi stressed that such humanitarian missions also strengthen the bonds of solidarity and brotherhood between the peoples of Iran and Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the death toll from the Afghanistan earthquake has risen to 3,000.
