WANA (Aug 03) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission announced that the Islamic Republic has sent an official letter to the UN Secretary-General and members of the Security Council regarding the European threat to trigger the “snapback” mechanism.

Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the commission, told reporters on Sunday that the body held two sessions, in the morning and afternoon, during which members reviewed key developments.

Rezaei noted that Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, attended the morning session and presented a report on the recent meeting in Istanbul with the European troika as well as his latest trip to New York, while also answering lawmakers’ questions.

According to Rezaei, Gharibabadi underlined that an official letter from the Foreign Minister had been submitted to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council. The letter emphasized that the snapback mechanism was “illegal and illegitimate,” adding that European states, having failed to uphold their commitments under the JCPOA, have no right to activate this provision.

Rezaei added that Iran has coordinated with China and Russia to counter this process and that in a recent trilateral meeting, the need to implement Iran’s Strategic Action Law—mandating suspension of cooperation with the IAEA—was reaffirmed.

Regarding the Istanbul talks, Rezaei said that Iran voiced strong objections to “the aggressive actions of the Zionist regime and the United States” against the country, as well as to Europe’s failure to condemn such actions.

He noted that the European side had proposed a six-month extension of Resolution 2231 provisions, but Iran insisted that discussions should focus instead on the formal termination of the snapback mechanism and the expiration of the resolution on schedule.

Rezaei stressed that decisions on this issue must align with the country’s national interests and security. He acknowledged that while the snapback may not directly result in new sanctions, its psychological impact requires careful management.

On the issue of negotiations with the United States, Rezaei said no new developments had occurred and reiterated that Iran’s principles remain clear and firm: recognition of the Iranian nation’s right to enrichment, full removal of sanctions, compensation for damages, and restoration of public trust are Tehran’s red lines.

He added that lawmakers emphasized reliance on domestic capabilities, strengthening national power, leveraging ties with China and Russia, and managing the public’s psychological environment. Some members further argued that JCPOA restrictions had, in some cases, been even harsher than past UN Security Council resolutions, stressing that the public should not be intimidated by the possibility of snapback activation.

The Supreme National Security Council, under Article 176 of the Constitution, also approved the establishment of the National Defense Council.

The Defense Council will centrally review defense plans and the enhancement of the Armed Forces’ capabilities. The council is chaired by the President and composed of the heads of the branches of government, senior military commanders, and representatives from certain relevant ministries.
