WANA (Jun 01) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has sharply criticized the European Union after the bloc condemned Tehran’s retaliatory strikes against U.S. military assets.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Baghaei denounced the EU’s stance, characterizing it as a blatant double standard in international relations.

“The EU’s statement blaming Iran for exercising its right to self-defense against U.S. aggression launched from bases in neighboring countries is a masterclass in selective moral outrage; it is hypocritical and reckless,” Baghaei stated.

Call to Uphold International Law

The spokesperson urged the European External Action Service (EEAS) to align its actions with its stated values, demanding an end to what he described as the appeasement of American aggression.

Baghaei defended the legality of Iran’s military response, arguing that international law permits nations to neutralize active threats to their sovereignty.

“The EU must remain faithful to the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter that it has long claimed to uphold,” Baghaei added.

“Iran’s strikes against those bases and assets that are used to launch unlawful attacks against Iran are a lawful exercise of self-defense. States have an established legal obligation not to allow their territory or assets to be used for invading other countries.”
