WANA (Aug 06) – The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations in Geneva has reiterated Tehran’s firm stance in support of the complete elimination of nuclear weapons, marking the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

 

The Mission wrote on its official account on X: “Preventing future tragedies such as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki requires genuine commitment to nuclear disarmament and the establishment of a world free from weapons of mass destruction.”

 

The statement continued: .“As a State Party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Iran supports the total elimination of all nuclear weapons, reaffirms its unwavering commitment to a world free of them, and at the same time, defends its legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear science and energy.”

 

On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, which had a population of 350,000. The attack killed around 140,000 people. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki.
