WANA (Oct 25) – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that the UN Charter is facing a serious test due to acts of aggression and the political misuse of its mechanisms.

Amir Saeid Iravani, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, said on Friday (local time): “Today, the Charter of the United Nations — which forms the foundation of international law and multilateralism — is under a serious test as a result of continued acts of aggression, impunity, and the political abuse of its mechanisms. In this regard, two glaring examples merit the Security Council’s urgent attention.”

“The first,” he continued, “is the aggressive actions committed by the Israeli regime against countries in the region, including my own. On 13 June 2025, the Israeli regime, with the direct support and participation of the United States, launched a large-scale war against the Islamic Republic of Iran without any provocation whatsoever. The Council’s continued silence and failure to respond to such grave violations not only embolden the aggressors but also severely undermine the very foundation of the UN Charter.”

He added: “The second instance, equally alarming, is the deliberate abuse of the Security Council’s authority by the three European parties to the JCPOA, acting under U.S. pressure and guidance. Their failed attempt to trigger the so-called ‘snapback mechanism’ under Resolution 2231 (2015) — an unfounded and unlawful effort to reimpose terminated sanctions resolutions against Iran — constitutes a flagrant breach of established procedures and is contrary to both the letter and the spirit of Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA. This politically motivated and biased action, which has been firmly rejected by several Council members — including two permanent ones — as well as by the broader international community, particularly the 121 member states of the Non-Aligned Movement, is devoid of any legal basis or validity and is therefore null and void.”

The senior Iranian diplomat stressed: “In such circumstances, the erosion of trust in the United Nations stems not from its principles but from the failure to uphold those principles honestly and impartially. When aggression goes unpunished and unilateralism replaces dialogue and multilateralism, the Charter loses its meaning, and the Security Council’s credibility is shaken.”

Iravani emphasized: “To restore confidence, UN member states must reaffirm the primacy of the Charter and recommit themselves to genuine multilateralism based on equality, mutual respect, and the rule of law. The Security Council, in particular, must discharge its primary responsibility in an impartial, effective, and non-selective manner and ensure that no member — however powerful — is able to exploit or manipulate this body for political or unilateral purposes.”
