WANA (Oct 13) – The head of Iran’s Article 90 Commission of Parliament announced that, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iran will pursue a full legal defense in international forums to reaffirm its undisputed sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands. This action comes in response to what Tehran described as baseless statements made by the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) regarding the islands.

Hojjatoleslam Nasrollah Pejmanfar, speaking to reporters after a session of the Parliamentary Article 90 Commission, said the meeting was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who presented reports on several key issues — including the situation in the South Caucasus and the Zangezur Corridor, challenges related to foreign nationals residing in Iran (known as Khavari residents), the status of Iran’s sovereignty over the three islands, and the expansion of strategic relations with China and Russia.

Addressing the Zangezur Corridor issue, Pejmanfar emphasized that the Islamic Republic shares a direct border with Armenia, and the Commission discussed the importance of economic cooperation and trade exchanges with neighboring countries, especially those in the South Caucasus region, to strengthen regional ties.

Regarding the presence of foreign nationals in Iran, he noted that while some reside temporarily as laborers and others hold long-term residency, the process of citizenship acquisition for certain groups is also under review, with further consultations held with the Foreign Minister on the matter.

On the three islands — Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb, Pejmanfar described the issue as a key focus of the session, saying: “There have been unfounded and provocative remarks from some Arab and European countries regarding the islands. In response, the Foreign Minister stated that Iran will continue to compile all available documents and evidence confirming its ownership and will pursue a comprehensive legal defense in international forums. Reports of these actions will be submitted to the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee as well as the Article 90 Commission.”

Pejmanfar further highlighted the growing ties with China and Russia, noting that both nations have consistently demonstrated strong relations with Tehran. He added that despite “Western provocations,” Moscow has remained committed to cooperation with Iran, particularly during and after the 12-day regional conflict in the Caucasus.

Referring to the 25-year strategic partnership with China, Pejmanfar said the agreement reflects the Foreign Ministry’s and government’s efforts to build sustainable relations. He emphasized that Parliament also supports the expansion of cooperation with Beijing and Moscow, noting that the appointment of ambassadors to both countries aims to deepen diplomatic and economic engagement and leverage mutual capabilities.

He concluded that strengthening ties with nations sharing common interests, particularly China and Russia, sends a clear message to neighboring states: “Iran will never tie its national interests to Western countries. We have chosen to move forward by engaging with powerful, capable, and motivated partners who respect mutual interests.”
