Iran to Host Domestic and International Satellite Launches This Fall
WANA (Sep 30) – Iran is preparing for several domestic and international satellite launches in the coming months, according to Hassan Salarieh, head of the Iranian Space Agency.
In an interview outlining the country’s space program for the second half of the year, Salarieh said: “From the beginning of the year, we had projected at least five domestic launches and several international ones. Some of these have already been carried out, while others are scheduled for fall and winter.”
Research-Oriented Launches in Summer
He explained that many of the launches conducted over the summer were research- and laboratory-based, and therefore were not publicly announced. “These launches were mostly suborbital and carried out with the goal of developing launch vehicle technologies,” he noted. Salarieh emphasized the importance of stabilizing launch vehicle technology for the future of Iran’s space industry, adding:
“Our initial projection was to have at least five domestic launches this year, but it is certain we will exceed that number. Some will be suborbital. These domestic launches involve one-stage or two-stage launcher tests and are largely focused on research and development.”
Upcoming Satellite Launches
On satellites ready for launch, Salarieh said: “Plans are underway for the launches of the Zafar, Paya, and the second model of the Kowsar satellite. We anticipate they will be launched in the fall.”
He stressed that Iran only proceeds with launches once full readiness is assured: “Even if readiness reaches 99.9 percent, we will not proceed without 100 percent certainty. The smallest defect in final testing—whether in the satellite or the launcher—can cause a delay.”
International Launch Cooperation
Salarieh added that the same principle applies to international launches: “In many cases, multiple satellites must be placed into orbit simultaneously. If one of the main payloads encounters an issue, the entire launch is postponed. Last year, for this reason, a planned launch was delayed.”
Looking Ahead
He expressed optimism that, based on current consultations, both international and domestic launches will take place this fall.
“More detailed information will be provided for those launches where placing the satellite in orbit and its operational performance are of practical importance. Launches conducted solely for the purpose of developing launch vehicle technology will not necessarily receive wide media coverage,” Salarieh concluded.
