Iran Urges IAEA to Condemn Israeli Attacks, Warns of Legal Action
WANA (Jun 19) – The Vice President and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, in a letter to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that “the Islamic Republic of Iran has taken the necessary measures to defend its sovereign rights and will pursue appropriate legal action, particularly concerning Your Excellency’s inaction.”
In the letter addressed to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Mohammad Eslami strongly condemned what he described as repeated “savage and unlawful” attacks by the “criminal Zionist regime” on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.
He criticized the IAEA, especially its Board of Governors, for what he called “inaction” in the face of such aggression, accusing it of operating under the influence of the United States, several European nations, and Israel.
Referring to previous correspondence, including letter No. 30/30 dated June 13, 2025, Eslami said Iran had repeatedly warned about the dangers of inaction but received no effective response.
He stated that in the early morning of Thursday, June 19, Israeli forces targeted the Khondab (Arak) heavy water research reactor and the neighboring heavy water production facility — both under IAEA supervision.
He added that these attacks were part of a broader campaign that has previously struck enrichment complexes in Natanz and Fordow, as well as various sections of the Isfahan uranium processing plant (UCF).
“These military attacks are blatant violations of international law,” Eslami wrote, citing the Geneva Conventions, the IAEA’s own statute, the framework of UNSCEAR (UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation), the NPT, and the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (INFCIRC/214), in addition to numerous resolutions and safety standards.
Eslami concluded by demanding that the IAEA immediately condemn Israel’s actions and fulfill its responsibilities under international law. He reaffirmed that Iran would not hesitate to take legal and defensive actions to protect its sovereignty.
