Iran Urges UN Action in Call With Guterres
WANA (Sep 12) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday night, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and regional developments.
Araghchi highlighted Iran’s responsible approach in pursuing constructive talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to reach an understanding, stressing that European parties and UN Security Council members must recognize the value and significance of this progress.
Guterres welcomed the recent agreement on Iran-IAEA cooperation and reaffirmed the United Nations’ support for continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement on Iran’s nuclear issue.
The Iranian foreign minister reiterated Tehran’s determination to safeguard the rights and interests of the Iranian people under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He also underscored the need for the UN and all states to take a clear and firm stance in condemning unlawful attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.
Araghchi criticized the approach of the three European countries for ignoring U.S. and Israeli military aggression while threatening to reinstate previously revoked Security Council resolutions, calling it irresponsible and unjustified. “Such a stance will only complicate the matter further,” he warned.
Referring again to Iran’s constructive engagement with the IAEA amid new challenges following recent attacks on its nuclear sites, Araghchi underlined that the international community must appreciate this responsible conduct.
Turning to regional issues, the foreign minister described the ongoing genocide in occupied Palestine and Israel’s warmongering as the world’s most pressing concern.
Condemning Israel’s recent “terrorist aggression” against Qatar, he stressed the shared responsibility of the global community, the UN, and the Secretary-General himself to stop the genocide and curb Israel’s expansionism and aggression.
