Iran Urges UN Investigation into Alleged Use of Mercenaries by Israel
WANA (Jul 10) – Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva has formally called on the UN Working Group on the Use of Mercenaries to conduct an immediate and comprehensive investigation into what it described as Israel’s deployment of mercenaries in its military aggression against Iranian territory.
In an official letter sent to the Working Group, Iran provided documents and evidence indicating the organized involvement of mercenary networks affiliated with foreign governments in targeted assassinations of Iranian scientists, senior military commanders, civilians, and citizens, as well as in coordinated explosions and armed drone attacks deep inside Iranian soil.
The Iranian mission emphasized that such acts are a blatant violation of international law, including Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, and contravene the 1989 International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing and Training of Mercenaries, alongside fundamental principles of international human rights and humanitarian law.
Official reports state that these aggressive attacks have resulted in the deaths of over one thousand people in Iran.
Iran’s mission urged the Working Group to not only initiate urgent investigations and reflect the findings in its upcoming reports to the Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly, but also to publicly condemn the use of mercenaries and cooperate with relevant bodies to ensure accountability.
The letter concluded with a call for the Working Group’s full commitment to its mandate on this sensitive issue, urging it to act with seriousness, determination, and justice.
