WANA (Jul 21) – Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN Security Council, calling for the immediate condemnation of the U.S. attack on the Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant and urging the Council to take action over the incident.

 

In the letter, Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said the U.S. missile strike on the Karun (Darkhovin) Nuclear Power Plant in Iran’s Khuzestan Province, which is under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), constituted a clear violation of the UN Charter, international law, the IAEA Statute, and relevant UN Security Council and IAEA General Conference resolutions.

 

He stressed that all activities at the facility are exclusively peaceful and are carried out in full compliance with Iran’s obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA.

 

Iravani also stated that Iran considers the strike to be the eighteenth attack on its IAEA-safeguarded nuclear facilities since the start of what it described as joint U.S.-Israeli attacks in June 2025, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to nuclear safety and security and undermine the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.

 

The letter calls on the UN Security Council to condemn the U.S. attack on the safeguarded Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant without delay or double standards, reaffirm the illegality of attacks against peaceful nuclear facilities, demand that the United States immediately halt its attacks and threats against Iran, and hold Washington fully accountable under international law for the consequences of its actions.

 

Iran’s representative also requested that the letter be circulated and published as an official document of the UN Security Council.
