WANA (Jul 09) – Iran’s delegation to the United Nations Working Group on the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS), meeting in Geneva, called on member states to unequivocally condemn what it described as U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran’s peaceful space infrastructure and facilities.

 

The Iranian delegation said the attacks targeted civilian, scientific, and research space facilities used for crisis management, satellite communications, scientific research, and other public civilian services. It stated that attacks on civilian space infrastructure constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, and the Outer Space Treaty, warning that silence over such actions endangers the peaceful use of outer space by all countries.

 

Iran also criticized U.S. efforts to justify the attacks on civilian space infrastructure, describing such arguments as baseless and dangerous. The delegation further warned about the growing non-peaceful role of non-state actors, including Starlink, in providing space services for hostile and non-peaceful purposes.

 

The Iranian delegation also identified the weaponization of outer space, including the U.S. “Golden Dome” program, as one of the most significant threats to international security and the peaceful use of space.

 

It called for the immediate launch of negotiations at the UN Conference on Disarmament to draft a legally binding instrument preventing the deployment of weapons in outer space and an arms race in space.

 

Iran also urged the UN working group and its member states to firmly condemn the U.S. and Israeli attacks against the Islamic Republic’s peaceful space infrastructure and facilities.
