Iran Voices Concern Over U.S. Presence in Armenia
WANA (Aug 17) – Chairman of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Seyed Kamal Kharrazi, has expressed Tehran’s opposition to the U.S. presence in Armenia under the guise of an investment company managing a communication corridor between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He urged Yerevan to address Iran’s concerns in this regard.
Kharrazi made the remarks on Wednesday, August 13, during a meeting in Tehran with Vahan Kostanyan, Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, who briefed Iranian officials on the latest developments in the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Referring to a recently initialed agreement, Kharrazi stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Armenia and Azerbaijan, as well as preserving existing borders to ensure peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
He warned that U.S. involvement through a so-called investment company could pave the way for deeper American interference in the region. “We hope the Armenian government will address the concerns of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Kharrazi said.
For his part, Deputy FM Kostanyan thanked Iran for its consistent support of Armenia and emphasized Yerevan’s commitment to taking Iran’s considerations and red lines into account in its foreign relations.
He also expressed hope that the upcoming visit of the Iranian President to Armenia and the signing of new agreements would further expand cooperation between the two countries.
