WANA (Jan 18) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry has warned the United States against pursuing what it described as ongoing policies of escalation in the Middle East, stressing that Tehran would respond decisively to any act of aggression.

Speaking to reporters, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei rejected claims attributed to a U.S. State Department–affiliated account alleging that Iran is preparing options to target American interests in the region. He said such statements fit within Washington’s long-standing approach of maintaining tension and instability in the region.

Baghaei emphasized that Iran’s armed forces remain firmly committed to preserving and enhancing the country’s military and defensive capabilities, describing this posture as purely defensive and aimed at protecting Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “It is self-evident that the Islamic Republic of Iran will respond with strength and determination to any aggressive action,” he said.

His remarks came after the U.S. State Department announced on Saturday that it had received reports suggesting Iran is considering and preparing options to target U.S. military bases in the region. American officials have warned that any attack on U.S. interests would be met with a strong response.

Relations between Tehran and Washington have remained highly strained in recent months, following repeated threats by the U.S. president and Washington’s overt support for unrest and acts of sabotage inside Iran. Iranian officials have consistently stated that any direct action by the United States against Iran would trigger a firm response.

Although the U.S. president has recently moderated the tone of his public rhetoric toward Iran, Iranian officials point to past confrontations—including the recent 12-day conflict involving the United States and Israel against Tehran—as evidence that the risk of escalation persists. Against this backdrop, Iran’s armed forces say they remain fully prepared for any destabilizing moves by their adversaries.
