WANA (Aug 05) – The Advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic in International Affairs has reacted to claims by some governments regarding the Zangezur Corridor plan.
Ali Akbar Velayati wrote on the social media platform X: “Once again, some self-proclaimed governments—disregarding their own and the region’s interests—have raised the issue of the Zangezur Corridor and are knocking on every door to advance their illegitimate goals in the South Caucasus.”
He emphasized: “Let me remind [everyone] that any government, whether inside or outside the region, that tries to repeat a previously failed experience will face a firm response from Iran.”
Earlier, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Ali Akbar Ahmadian, had also reiterated the Islamic Republic’s firm stance against any changes to the regional geopolitical landscape during a phone call with his Armenian counterpart.

In recent years, the Zangezur Corridor has become a point of tension between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan. This corridor—still not established—is intended to connect Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan.
Azerbaijan is pushing for its swift opening, and the United States is reportedly considering leasing it for a hundred years once it opens. For Baku, establishing a direct link without relying on Iran or Armenia is of strategic importance.
Iran, however, considers the creation of the Zangezur Corridor to be against its regional interests, as it would involve changes to borders by transferring part of Armenian territory to Azerbaijan.
Furthermore, Tehran is also concerned that the opening of the corridor could increase the influence of the United States and Israel in the South Caucasus—something that could pose a serious security challenge for Iran.
