Iran: We Strongly Oppose Any Attempt to Undermine Syria’s National Sovereignty
WANA (Jul 28) – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s unwavering commitment to the sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, declaring that Iran firmly opposes any direct or indirect attempts to weaken Syria’s national sovereignty or divide its territory.
Speaking at the UN Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East and Syria on Monday (local time), Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani warned: “We caution against the dangerous and destabilizing agenda of the Israeli regime aimed at separating Syria’s southern provinces from the authority of the central government.”
He emphasized that such actions constitute clear violations of international law, the UN Charter, and Security Council resolutions, and represent a serious threat to regional stability. The Council, he said, must decisively reject these plans and reaffirm its commitment to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
Ambassador Iravani expressed deep concern over recent violent clashes in Suwayda that resulted in civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. He affirmed Iran’s support for the Syrian government’s efforts to restore stability and called for a swift, transparent investigation aligned with the rule of law.
He also drew attention to reports of mass killings targeting Alawites in the provinces of Latakia and Tartous, stressing the need for accountability in these crimes.
“Justice must be pursued in both cases — the violent unrest in Suwayda and the attacks against Alawite communities in coastal regions — through credible mechanisms, free from foreign interference and political exploitation,” he stated.
Iravani reiterated Iran’s support for full respect of minority rights and the resolution of internal disputes through inclusive dialogue.
“Sectarian violence undermines public trust in the political transition process, which must remain inclusive, national, and Syrian-owned,” he noted, adding that a united and inclusive Syria is essential for lasting peace and long-term stability.

Condemning recent Israeli airstrikes and acts of aggression against Damascus and southern Syria, he said: “These attacks not only violate international law and Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also further weaken the already fragile political process and complicate efforts toward dialogue and a negotiated solution.”
He called for an end to Israel’s unlawful occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights and its continued defiance of Security Council resolutions, stating that the Council cannot remain indifferent to such violations.
On the humanitarian situation, Iravani expressed grave concern over worsening conditions in Suwayda and other regions, highlighting severe shortages of food, water, fuel, medicine, and other essentials.
He welcomed the efforts of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UN agencies, and humanitarian partners, and urged donor countries to generously support Syria’s 2025 humanitarian response plan — especially in light of a severe funding gap.

“It is deeply concerning that only 36.6% of the 2024 Syria Humanitarian Response Plan has been funded,” he said.
The Iranian diplomat also called for lifting unlawful and unilateral sanctions imposed on the Syrian people.
“These illegitimate measures have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, disrupted reconstruction efforts, and crippled economic recovery,” he stated, emphasizing that lifting sanctions is essential for rebuilding Syria and creating conditions for the safe and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons.
However, he warned, “Sanctions relief must not be used as a tool for political pressure or be made conditional on interference in Syria’s internal affairs.”
In conclusion, Iravani stressed that the Syrian crisis has no military solution. “The only viable path forward is a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process, facilitated by the United Nations and based on the core principles of Resolution 2254,” he said. Iran, he added, supports ongoing inclusive dialogue that upholds Syria’s sovereignty and national institutions, and promotes reconciliation among all segments of society.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran remains fully committed to constructive cooperation with the United Nations and regional partners to support peace, justice, and the comprehensive reconstruction of Syria — free from occupation, terrorism, and foreign interference.”
