Iran Welcomes UN Resolution Condemning U.S. Sanctions on Cuba
WANA (Oct 30) – Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, welcomed the adoption of a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning U.S. economic sanctions against Cuba and strongly denounced the continuation of what he called “illegal and inhumane” measures imposed by Washington on the Republic of Cuba.
Baghaei emphasized that the U.S. sanctions against Cuba, which have targeted the fundamental rights of the Cuban people and the country’s development for more than six decades, constitute a “flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law.”
He further described the sanctions as “a crime against humanity,” citing their devastating impact on the Cuban people’s enjoyment of basic human rights.
Expressing Iran’s solidarity with the Cuban government and people in the face of U.S. intimidation and pressure, the spokesperson said that the overwhelming support of UN member states for the resolution was “a clear indication of the international community’s opposition to U.S. bullying and lawlessness.”
Baghaei concluded that the damage and suffering inflicted on Cuba as a result of these unlawful sanctions entail the international responsibility of the U.S. government, which, he asserted, “must be held accountable for these criminal actions.”
