Iran Women’s Football Captain Withdraws Asylum Request in Australia
WANA (Mar 15) – The captain of Iran’s national women’s football team has reportedly withdrawn her request for asylum in Australia and is preparing to return to Iran.
According to reports, Zahra Ghanbari, the captain of Iran’s women’s national football team, has reversed her earlier decision to seek asylum in Australia. She is expected to depart for Malaysia within hours before returning to Iran.
On Saturday, several other members of the Iranian delegation also reconsidered their decision.
Mohadeseh Zolfi, followed by Mona Hamoudi, Zahra Sarbali, and Zahra Meshkekar—two players and one member of the technical staff—announced that they would no longer pursue asylum.
They immediately traveled to Malaysia to reunite with the rest of the team and prepare for their return to Iran.
As a result, out of the seven individuals who had initially planned to remain in Australia, five are now in the process of returning to Iran.
