Iranian and Russian Foreign Ministers Discuss Ceasefire
WANA (Apr 09) – Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a telephone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday to discuss the latest regional developments and bilateral coordination.
U.S. Commitments and Regional De-escalation
Minister Araghchi expressed gratitude for Russia’s “responsible decision” to oppose the “illogical and unilateral” U.S.-proposed resolution at the UN Security Council. He described Russia’s stance as an effective move in preventing further escalation.
Highlighting Iran’s responsible approach in accepting the ceasefire, Araghchi emphasized that the burden now lies with the United States to fulfill its obligations: “The U.S. is responsible for honoring its commitment to stop the war across all areas, including Lebanon.”
New Protocols for the Strait of Hormuz
Regarding the current status of the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Foreign Minister clarified that secure passage through the waterway is possible only in accordance with established guidelines and in coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces.
He noted that vessels must utilize designated routes and adhere to existing technical measures, adding that this cooperation is contingent upon the American side remaining committed to its obligations.
Russia’s Support and Cultural Protection
Foreign Minister Lavrov welcomed the cessation of military aggression against Iran and reaffirmed Russia’s support for efforts to restore lasting stability and security to the entire region.
Furthermore, Lavrov highlighted the joint cooperation between Tehran and Moscow within the framework of UNESCO. He specifically noted efforts to condemn U.S. and Israeli military strikes on historical and religious sites, including the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Tehran.
