Iranian and Russian Presidents Highlight Role of Long-Term Agreement in Deepening Cooperation
WANA (Sep 01) – On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, September 01, 2025, stressed the importance of implementing the comprehensive long-term agreement between the two countries and its role in strengthening bilateral ties.
Pezeshkian described the agreement as a foundation for expanding cooperation, noting that its implementation—particularly within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union—could accelerate and facilitate economic interactions. He added that he is personally following up on the removal of potential obstacles and the swift execution of agreements with Russia. The Iranian president also underlined the importance of academic and scientific cooperation and the exchange of expertise, which he said would create synergies and pave the way for broader engagement between Tehran and Moscow.
Pointing to U.S. efforts to reinforce unilateralism, Pezeshkian emphasized the role of the SCO in advancing multilateralism, describing the organization as a suitable platform for pursuing shared initiatives.
Putin, for his part, expressed satisfaction with the growing trajectory of bilateral relations, saying that the implementation of the long-term comprehensive treaty had made cooperation between Iran and Russia both friendlier and more extensive. He noted a significant increase in trade volume in recent months and highlighted the importance of the Iran–Eurasian Economic Union free trade agreement in further boosting economic ties.
The Russian president also pointed to the rising number of Iranian students in Russian universities, the expansion of cultural exchange programs, and a growth in tourism flows. He further underscored the importance of continued regular consultations between the two countries on regional and international issues, including cooperation on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities.
