WANA (Jun 05) – One of the Iranian athletes arrested in connection with a sexual assault case in South Korea has attempted suicide while in custody, sources have confirmed.

 

On Sunday, South Korean media reported that three members of Iran’s national track and field team were detained in the city of Gumi on allegations of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman. The Iranian Athletics Federation later confirmed the arrests.

 

According to a well-informed source, one of the athletes attempted suicide while in detention, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

 

The source did not provide specific details about the method of the attempted suicide, but stated that the athlete’s condition is currently stable.

 

On Monday night, the remainder of the Iranian national team returned home from South Korea, where they had been participating in the Asian Athletics Championships.

 

South Korean police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and could take several months to conclude.
