WANA (Aug 30) – Iranian taekwondo athletes wrapped up their campaign on the final day of the China Open Taekwondo Championships, highlighted by a dominant championship performance from Saghar Moradi.

 

Competing in the women’s -67 kg division, Moradi secured the gold medal after an undefeated run, concluding with a victory over Greece’s Styliani Marentaki in the final.

 

Moradi recorded six consecutive straight-set wins without dropping a single round throughout the tournament to take top honors. Moradi’s path to the title included a series of notable victories:

 

  • Round 1: Defeated Daria Mesli (Russia) 2–0
  • Round 2: Defeated Jiani Xing (China), the previous edition’s runner-up and 2025 Bangkok Grand Prix silver medalist, 2–0
  • Round of 16: Defeated Chloe Chua (USA) 2–0
  • Quarterfinals: Defeated Doris Pole (Croatia) 2–0 to secure a spot in the semifinals
  • Semifinals: Defeated Aleksandra Perišić (Serbia), Paris Olympic silver medalist and former World and European champion, 2–0
  • Final: Defeated Styliani Marentaki (Greece) 2–0

 

Early Exit for -57 kg Contenders

In the -57 kg category, Iran’s Nahid Kiani received a first-round bye but was eliminated in the second round following a 2–0 loss to 2022 World Champion Makayla Greenwood of the United States.

 

Teammate Hasti Mohammadi opened her campaign with a 2–0 victory over Comoros’ Adam Ilona Resna. However, she was eliminated in the second round after falling 2–0 to China’s Zhouling Zhang, a bronze medalist at the 2025 World Championships.

 

Tournament Overview

Iran opened its medal tally on the first day of competition when Hana Zarrinkamar secured a silver medal in the +73 kg weight division.

 

Led by head coach Mahrouz Saei, the Iranian women’s national team concluded its participation in the Women’s World Open Championships with a total of one gold and one silver medal across five competing weight categories.
