WANA (Jan 20) – Iran’s Judiciary has opened legal cases against several well-known figures from the country’s sports and film industries, as well as cultural establishments, over alleged involvement in recent unrest. According to reports published by judiciary-affiliated media, the Tehran Prosecutor’s Office has also moved to seize assets belonging to some of the accused.

The initiative follows directives from Iran’s Chief Justice calling for a thorough investigation into individuals and groups that, according to authorities, directly or indirectly supported the rallies and calls for action on January 8–9, 2026. Officials say those events resulted in casualties among civilians, firefighters, medical personnel, and security forces, as well as extensive damage to public and private property.

Judicial reports indicate that 15 high-profile figures in sports and cinema, along with 10 signatories of a statement issued by the House of Cinema, now face legal proceedings. Authorities also listed roughly 60 cafés and cultural venues alleged to have supported the rallies, either directly or indirectly.

Court filings suggest that some assets have already been frozen and that prosecutors are assessing whether losses incurred during the unrest could be partially compensated through fines or asset liquidation, should the accused be convicted. No further details have been disclosed about the timeline or nature of the hearings, and the accused individuals have not yet publicly commented.
