Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan Criticizes U.S. Role in Drug Trafficking
WANA (Dec 03) – The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Azerbaijan has issued a statement criticizing the United States’ role in the expansion of drug trafficking in the region, asserting that promotional campaigns highlighting specialized equipment cannot conceal on-the-ground realities.
In response to a recent statement by the U.S. Embassy in Baku emphasizing the role of its donated equipment in detecting drug shipments along transit routes, the Iranian embassy said:
“Fighting drug trafficking is a collective, ongoing, and complex responsibility. Any publicity operation that highlights specific equipment cannot mask the realities on the ground. Within this framework, attention must be given to the role of the American side in the unprecedented increase in drug production and trafficking in Afghanistan.”
The statement cited official reports from international organizations indicating that during more than two decades of U.S. and allied occupation in Afghanistan, the level of drug cultivation and trafficking multiplied several times, with repercussions still affecting many countries in the region, including Iran and Azerbaijan.
Iran emphasized its decades-long frontline role in combating drug trafficking, bearing the heaviest human and financial costs. Despite limitations in equipment and technology due to “unlawful and oppressive sanctions,” Iran’s efforts to prevent the overflow of narcotics to Europe and other regions have been consistently recognized and praised by international bodies.
The embassy also stressed that close cooperation with neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan, to combat this transnational crime will continue with determination.
The statement highlighted a visit by Iran’s Chief of Anti-Narcotics Police to Azerbaijan on November 25, 2025, noting that the resulting discussions and agreements marked a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral collaboration.
