Iranian Foreign Minister Arrives in Istanbul for Talks with Turkish Leaders
WANA (Jan 30) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in Istanbul on Friday morning, where he was formally welcomed by senior officials from Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signaling the political importance both sides attach to the visit amid mounting regional tensions.
According to Iranian media reports, Araghchi was received by a regional director-general of the Turkish Foreign Ministry. During the one-day trip, he is scheduled to hold talks with his Turkish counterpart and meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Discussions are expected to focus on Iran–Turkey bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments, at a time when crises across the Middle East — from the war in Gaza to escalating tensions between Iran and Western powers — have further complicated the regional landscape.
Speaking upon arrival, Araghchi highlighted what he described as “serious challenges” facing the region, stressing the need for closer coordination between Tehran and Ankara. He noted that objectives pursued by the United States and other international actors make intensified consultations among regional countries increasingly necessary.
The Iranian foreign minister criticized recent European positions toward Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), calling them a “strategic mistake.” He argued that European governments would “soon realize” that their approach had been misguided.
Araghchi’s visit to Turkey is widely seen as part of Iran’s broader regional diplomacy aimed at maintaining dialogue with key neighboring actors, as power dynamics in the Middle East and Europe’s role in global politics face growing scrutiny and reassess ment.
