Iranian Foreign Minister Holds Phone Call with UN Secretary-General
WANA (Mar 17) – Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, held a phone conversation on Monday night with UN Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the latest regional developments, including what he described as the continued U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, as well as the situation in Lebanon.
During the call, Araghchi pointed to clear violations of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law resulting from U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran. He stressed the responsibility of the United Nations and the Secretary-General to explicitly condemn these actions and to hold those responsible accountable under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
He also urged the international community to focus on the primary source of instability in the region and the Strait of Hormuz, namely U.S. and Israeli military actions.
Araghchi emphasized that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz cannot be viewed in isolation from broader regional developments, adding that disruptions to maritime navigation in the waterway are a consequence of the ongoing conflict.
He called on countries and international bodies concerned with peace and security to act responsibly, condemn the actions, and demand an end to military operations against Iran.
The Iranian foreign minister further condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the killing of hundreds of civilians, warning that continued inaction toward Israel’s conduct in the occupied Palestinian territories and across the region would only lead to further instability and an expansion of conflict.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General shared his views on the situation in the Persian Gulf, West Asia, and maritime security during the call.
