Iranian-Made Nuclear Tech Detects Alzheimer’s Decades Ahead
WANA (Jul 29) – While Alzheimer’s disease remains incurable—with progression that may be slowed but not stopped—Iranian nuclear scientists have developed a radiopharmaceutical capable of detecting the disease up to 20 years before symptoms appear, offering new hope for early intervention.
As one Iranian nuclear expert explains, “Alzheimer’s has no cure. You might be able to slow its progression, but the disease itself only truly ends with the patient’s death. In that sense, death is the only ‘cure’ we currently know.”
The report highlights a breakthrough achieved through Iran’s nuclear technology sector. Scientists recently developed and produced a radiopharmaceutical that enables early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s—an effort two years in the making.
“One of the radiopharmaceuticals we have recently succeeded in producing is designed specifically for the early detection of Alzheimer’s. It can predict the onset of the disease up to two decades before symptoms begin,” the expert said.
The compound in question, Florbetapir, not only identifies early pathological signs but also allows for more targeted and effective treatment strategies aimed at slowing the disease’s progression.
In one case study, a 56-year-old patient, referred to the medical center with signs of cognitive impairment, underwent imaging after receiving the injection. Results showed positive clinical outcomes, with visible neurological improvements indicating the value of early detection.
The development of this compound is the result of two years of scientific effort by experts in Iran’s nuclear industry. The process faced significant obstacles due to international sanctions, particularly from U.S.-based companies in the field, who refused to cooperate.
“Despite reaching out to major pharmaceutical firms around the world, especially those in the U.S., none were willing to collaborate with us. So we moved forward independently and succeeded in producing the first domestic doses of Florbetapir,” the expert said.
So far, 80 patients have received this radiopharmaceutical, and nuclear medicine specialists report outstanding results in the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
This innovation marks a critical milestone in Iran’s application of nuclear technology for medical purposes—especially in tackling complex neurodegenerative conditions where early diagnosis is key, even if a cure remains out of reach.
