Iranian Nano Toothpaste Combats Sensitivity and Decay
WANA (Jul 30) – Technologists at an Iranian industrial company have developed an innovative toothpaste using nanotechnology that offers anti-sensitivity properties and enamel-repair capabilities. This nano-based toothpaste not only helps prevent tooth decay but also reduces the pain caused by dental sensitivity.
One of the major breakthroughs in oral healthcare has been the application of nanotechnology to enhance the effectiveness of toothpaste. In this regard, an Iranian company has succeeded in producing a toothpaste containing carbonate-substituted magnesium hydroxyapatite nanorods.
This formulation provides multiple benefits simultaneously, including gradual enamel repair, reduced sensitivity, whitening, and freshening of the mouth.
Tooth sensitivity is a common issue that manifests as sudden and sometimes sharp pain when consuming cold, hot, acidic, or sweet foods—or even when breathing cold air with an open mouth.
This pain can indicate enamel damage, gum recession, or microcracks in the teeth. While the pain may be temporary, neglecting it can lead to more serious problems such as extensive decay or gum inflammation.
To address these issues, the nano toothpaste uses an innovative combination of carbonate-substituted magnesium hydroxyapatite nanorods.

Hydroxyapatite is a biocompatible mineral naturally found in tooth enamel and bones. When engineered at the nanoscale, it becomes an effective material for repairing damaged enamel surfaces.
Due to their high surface area and extremely small size, nano-hydroxyapatite particles can strongly bond with salivary proteins and oral microbial structures.
By filling microcracks, pores, and shallow cavities in the enamel, they help strengthen tooth structure and reduce its permeability to external stimuli. As a result, dental sensitivity gradually decreases, and the tooth surface becomes more resistant to harmful factors.
Beyond structural repair, these nanoparticles also help inhibit microbial plaque formation and reduce gum inflammation. By adhering to bacterial walls or preventing biofilm formation, they lower the risk of decay and inflammation.
According to the Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council, key benefits of this nano toothpaste include:
- Gradual enamel repair by filling micro-damage with mineral nanorods
- Reduced tooth sensitivity by insulating nerve pathways
- Anti-plaque and anti-inflammatory effects to help prevent gum disease
- Whitening effect while preserving natural enamel
- Mouth freshening and a lasting sense of cleanliness
- Suitable for all age groups
