Iranian Officials React To Attack On Energy Infrastructure; Warning Of Escalating Tensions
WANA (Mar 18) – Following reports of a joint U.S.–Israeli attack on energy infrastructure in southern Iran, senior Iranian officials condemned the action and warned about its consequences for regional and global security.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, stated in a message on the social media platform X that targeting infrastructure is “tantamount to suicide for the attackers.”
Referring to recent developments, he wrote: “Last night, the people of Iran thwarted all enemy plans,” adding that such attacks are an attempt to conceal “failures on the ground.” Ghalibaf also warned that “an eye-for-an-eye equation is in effect” and spoke of the beginning of “a new level of confrontation.”
In a separate response, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian strongly condemned the attack on the country’s energy infrastructure. In a statement, he said such actions would bring “no gains” to those responsible and could further complicate the situation, potentially leading to “uncontrollable” consequences—ones that, according to him, could extend beyond the region.
At the same time, local officials in Iran’s energy-rich south reported damage. Eskandar Pasalar, governor of Asaluyeh, said that several phases of the South Pars gas field had been struck by projectiles. According to him, these phases were temporarily taken offline to prevent the spread of fire.
Pasalar emphasized that the situation is under control and that firefighting teams are working to contain the blaze. He also announced the establishment of a crisis management headquarters and the implementation of necessary emergency response measures.
Following the reported U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran’s South Pars facilities, Brent crude oil prices rose by more than 5 percent, reaching nearly $110 per barrel.
