Iranian Para-Cyclists Miss World Championships After Belgium Visa Denial
WANA (Aug 28) – The Para-Cycling World Championships began in Belgium on Wednesday, but two Iranian athletes were forced to miss the competition after the Belgian embassy failed to issue their visas.
The championships opened on August 27 with medical classification for two events: the individual time trial and the road race.
Iranian cyclists Ahmad Hamzelou and Behrouz Farzad, along with coach Maziar Farzad, were scheduled to travel to Belgium for classification and competition. However, due to the embassy’s refusal to issue visas, the Iranian delegation was unable to participate.
This marks the second setback for Hamzelou, who also missed the previous Asian Para-Cycling Championships in Thailand because he lacked the required medical classification.
Both Hamzelou and Behrouz Farzad were supposed to receive their international classification confirmation on Wednesday before competing at the world championships. Instead, the visa denial prevented their departure and participation.
