Iranian Pilots Held in Qatar Are in Poor Health
WANA (Aug 22) – Brig. Gen. Bagherzadeh, commander of the Missing-in-Action Search Committee of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff, has warned about the deteriorating health of Iranian pilots being held in Qatar and called for their immediate transfer to land and a fully equipped medical facility.
Bagherzadeh said the conditions at the site where the detainees are being held on the water are not suitable for maintaining their health, urging the Qatari government to move them to land and a properly equipped hospital as soon as possible.
He also called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to arrange an air ambulance to facilitate the rapid transfer of injured and ill Iranian detainees to Iran. Bagherzadeh welcomed Qatar’s decision to receive an Iranian expert team and stressed the need for cooperation to accelerate efforts to address the detainees’ situation.
Emphasizing the need to uphold the rights of prisoners of war, Bagherzadeh also called on Kuwait to comply with the four Geneva Conventions, facilitate a meeting between Iran’s ambassador and four Iranian detainees in the country, and enable them to establish initial contact with their families.
He further urged the ICRC to expedite efforts toward securing the release of the Iranian detainees and to facilitate video calls between them and their families. Bagherzadeh called on the ICRC’s regional office for Arab countries to take the lead in following up on the detainees’ situation and helping establish communication with their families.
