Iranian Students Rally for Nuclear Rights at Darkhovin Nuclear Plant
WANA (May 29) – On May 28, a group of students from Khuzestan formed a human chain in front of the Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant in Khuzestan Province and held a peaceful gathering to express their support for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
Chanting slogans in support of Iran’s right to enrich uranium, the students emphasized the need to accelerate the completion and operationalization of the Darkhovin. They described it as a significant step toward energy independence, scientific advancement, and strengthening the country’s deterrent power.
They also expressed solidarity with other students across the country who have held similar gatherings in recent days, and called on officials to prioritize the completion of the unfinished Darkhovin project as a national demand within development policies.
The Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant, located in the city of Darkhovin in Shadegan County, Khuzestan Province, is Iran’s second nuclear power plant. It is a heavy water reactor with a planned production capacity of 360 megawatts of electricity.

The project began in the 1990s with the aim of generating electricity using nuclear technology to sustainably meet part of the country’s energy needs without environmental pollution.
Construction of the Darkhovin plant started with the cooperation of domestic experts and some foreign consultants. However, due to sanctions, financial constraints, and international restrictions, the project has faced significant delays.
Although it was intended to be one of the leading centers in the field of nuclear energy, the plant has not yet been fully operational. Speeding up its completion and launch remains a key demand of nuclear advocates and students alike.
Beyond its role in electricity generation, the Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant is also seen as a symbol of technological progress and Iran’s self-sufficiency in the nuclear field.
It’s worth noting that after students in Qom, Bushehr, Karaj, Tehran, and Isfahan, this time, students from Khuzestan formed a human chain in front of the Darkhovin Nuclear Power Plant.
