Iranian Supertanker Reportedly Circumvents U.S. Blockade
WANA (May 03) – The Iranian supertanker HUGE has successfully navigated past U.S. naval surveillance and has been sighted in the Far East carrying a cargo valued at approximately $220 million.
According to reports, the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), reached Far Eastern waters after bypassing monitoring by transregional fleets. The vessel is reportedly transporting over 1.9 million barrels of crude oil.
Strategic Navigation Tactics
Navigation data indicates that the supertanker, which was last observed near the coast of Sri Lanka, employed concealment tactics including the deactivation of its Automatic Identification System (AIS) starting on March 20, 2026. The vessel reportedly charted a course through Indonesia’s Lombok Strait toward the Riau Archipelago.
The use of alternative routes, specifically opting for the Lombok Strait over more heavily trafficked shipping lanes, is seen as a reflection of sophisticated Iranian navigation strategies aimed at managing energy supply chains and neutralizing U.S. naval monitoring.
Operational Significance
Officials suggest that the successful completion of this transit demonstrates the country’s operational capability in securing the transport of strategic cargo to target markets. The maneuver is being framed as evidence of the effectiveness of Iranian maritime strategies in bypassing international surveillance measures.
