WANA (May 03) – In an unprecedented medical achievement, a gallbladder removal surgery was successfully performed on a 92-year-old woman without the use of any general or spinal anesthesia at Bibi Hakimeh Hospital in Gachsaran, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, southwestern Iran.

Dr. Maziar Karamnejad is a specialist in general and reconstructive surgery and a subspecialist in cardiovascular surgery. He explained that the patient suffered from severe heart and lung failure alongside biliary symptoms, making her unable to tolerate anesthesia due to her age and respiratory complications.

A High-Stakes Procedure

According to Dr. Karamnejad, the patient had previously been hospitalized for two months in neighboring provinces, but surgeons there had declined to operate due to the high risk of mortality.

Key details of the medical milestone include:

Patient Condition: The 92-year-old had suffered for two years and, in her final days before surgery, was unable to swallow even a drop of water.

The Operation: The surgical team decided to perform a total gallbladder removal while the patient was fully conscious and without the administration of any sedatives.

Outcome: The procedure lasted less than an hour. Following a week of postoperative care, the patient was discharged in good general health.

A Global First

Dr. Karamnejad noted that based on existing medical research, no prior case of a full therapeutic gallbladder removal performed without any form of general or spinal anesthesia has been recorded globally. This successful outcome marks a significant breakthrough for the medical staff at Bibi Hakimeh Hospital.
