Iran’s Air Defense: A Strategic Shield Against Emerging Threats
WANA (Jun 08) – With the increase in security threats and the changing nature of warfare, particularly in aerial combat, the enhancement of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s defensive capabilities on land, sea, and especially in its airspace has become a strategic necessity.
Accordingly, by order of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, the Army’s Air Defense Headquarters was established and strengthened in September 2008 as an independent structure tasked with defending the country’s airspace against any aerial threat.
Key Capabilities and Systems of Iran’s Air Defense
Today, Iran’s air defense plays a crucial role in securing the nation and maintaining deterrence, relying on advanced indigenous systems. Some of the most important equipment and capabilities include:

Bavar-373 System: A long-range, strategic indigenous missile system capable of detecting, tracking, and destroying various hostile targets, including ballistic missiles, under all weather conditions. This system comprises a command and control center, detection and tracking radars, and self-propelled launchers. It is also capable of countering cruise missiles, helicopters, and operating in chemically and radioactively contaminated environments.
15 Khordad System: A highly mobile, agile system equipped with a phased-array radar, capable of guiding six missiles simultaneously, and designed for rapid operational deployment.
Radar Systems: Indigenous radars such as Alborz-2 with a 450-kilometer range and the capability to track 300 targets simultaneously, Matla’ al-Fajr for detecting small drones and low radar cross-section targets, and Kavosh radar for covering blind spots play key roles. Additionally, the Fakour system provides rapid command and control responses in air defense operations.

Azarakhsh System: A highly mobile short-range system designed to counter low-altitude aerial targets such as drones, cruise missiles, and helicopters. This system integrates radar and launcher in a TELAR (Transporter Erector Launcher and Radar) configuration, enabling rapid response.
Arman System (Tactical Sayyad): A medium-range, high-altitude system developed to protect sensitive sites against threats such as short-range ballistic missiles, anti-radar missiles, cruise missiles, guided bombs, helicopters, and drones. It features a reaction time under 20 seconds, 360-degree coverage, simultaneous engagement of six targets, and can be deployed and made operational in less than three minutes, making it one of Iran’s most advanced tactical air defense systems.
Majid System: A low-altitude tactical missile system that operates without electromagnetic emissions, capable of tracking and engaging hostile targets, drones, and loitering threats.
Sayyad Missile Family: Developed by domestic scientists, this family of missiles includes various models designed to counter a wide range of aerial threats with high precision, playing a vital role in Iran’s air defense capabilities.

Utilizing these systems, Iran’s air defense acts as a robust shield, continuously monitoring and protecting the country’s airspace around the clock. The achievements of domestic expertise and the efforts of talented youth have transformed Iran into a formidable air defense power, disrupting the ambitions of its adversaries.
Commanders’ Warnings: A Firm Message of Deterrence
The General Staff of the Armed Forces emphasized in a statement that Iran’s military is fully prepared and possesses unparalleled capabilities to confront any threat. Additionally, Major General Hossein Salami, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, warned that any adventurism against Iran will face a severe and irreparable response, stressing that the Zionist regime will be eliminated should it engage militarily.
