WANA (Jun 17) – Ali Bahreini, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Office in Geneva, strongly condemned Israel’s recent aggression against Iran’s civilian infrastructure during the plenary session of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, in Geneva.

Bahreini denounced the Israeli regime’s attacks on communication and information technology infrastructure as illegal and called on international bodies to take immediate action against these blatant violations of Iran’s territorial integrity.

He described the deliberate targeting of communication networks, data centers, and digital infrastructure as a flagrant breach of international law and a clear violation of the foundational principles of the global telecommunications system. Specifically, he pointed to Article 1.3 of the ITU Constitution, which affirms the sovereign right of nations to manage their own telecommunication affairs.

The ambassador also referenced UN General Assembly Resolution 75/240, which underscores the need to protect critical infrastructure, and labeled the attacks as acts of cyber terrorism that endanger civilian services, including emergency communications, financial systems, and health networks.

Bahreini noted that on Monday, June 16, Israel targeted facilities belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), once again striking non-military communication infrastructure. He emphasized that this act constitutes a violation of Article 38 of the Geneva Conventions, ITU Resolution 130 (Bucharest, 2022) concerning the protection of telecommunication services, and UN Security Council Resolution 2222 (2015), which calls for the protection of journalists and media infrastructure.

He described the attack as a deliberate act of information warfare, posing a serious threat to pluralism and diversity in global communication, and warned that such actions set a dangerous precedent for the instrumentalization of media infrastructure in international conflicts.

The Iranian ambassador concluded by calling these attacks a clear breach of international law and a serious threat to regional peace and stability, urging the international community to hold Israel accountable for its acts of aggression.
