Iran’s Atomic Chief Criticises IAEA Head
WANA (Jan 28) – Mohammad Eslami, Iran’s Vice President and head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), commented on recent remarks by Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), during a press briefing on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Eslami said, “It is expected that Mr. Grossi does not use this kind of language. He is the Director General of an agency defined under the United Nations, and the statute defines duties for him. We expect him to adhere to his responsibilities in his reports.”
He added that all units that were hit during the 12-day war were registered with the IAEA and were under its supervision, and the agency should have reacted to these incidents.
Eslami emphasised that Iran has fully complied with its obligations and questioned what the IAEA is seeking to monitor if its sites were bombed and destroyed: “If they hit and bombed our sites and destroyed them, what are they looking for? What does the agency want to supervise now?” He urged the IAEA to clarify its procedures regarding military attacks so Iran can follow them.
Eslami also said that “the unfair treatment of the Iranian people and the Islamic Republic has been clearly exposed.” He described the nuclear issue as merely a pretext and accused the IAEA of failing to act fairly and professionally according to its statute following the military operation against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
He added that nuclear technology is the right of the Iranian nation and said Iran will act based on its national interests.
