WANA (Aug 27) – Chabahar Port, Iran’s only oceanic port, is set for a major transformation as it prepares to host its first megasize container ship belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL).

The development marks a significant step toward the port’s commercialization and expansion of maritime transport infrastructure, signaling the start of a new chapter in Iran’s international trade.

Located on the strategic Makran coast, Chabahar Port will soon berth a container vessel with a capacity of over 20,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), positioning the port as a hub for international commerce and logistics growth. IRISL confirmed that the vessel will dock at Chabahar shortly, boosting the port’s container-handling capabilities to a new level.

Over the past two years, Chabahar’s capacity has expanded dramatically—from 6,000 TEUs to nearly 90,000 TEUs—reflecting Iran’s national strategy to upgrade port infrastructure and attract large commercial vessels.

Once fully operational, the port is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating cargo transit from China, India, and the United Arab Emirates to regional and global markets.

Megasize container ships, among the world’s largest commercial vessels, are capable of carrying massive volumes of cargo, reducing both transport time and costs.

Analysts suggest that these advantages will draw greater attention from traders and boost Chabahar’s competitiveness against Iran’s busiest port, Shahid Rajaee Port.

IRISL has also introduced competitive freight rates to encourage shippers to route cargo through Chabahar. Officials emphasize that the port is being developed as a complementary alternative to Shahid Rajaee, aligning with national resilience policies and efforts to diversify Iran’s maritime gateways.

Experts believe the arrival of the megasize vessel is not only evidence of Iran’s expanding port infrastructure but also an indication of its ambition to enhance its role in global trade.

With strategic positioning along key transit corridors—including potential integration with the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)—Chabahar is expected to emerge as a critical node in regional logistics and investment.

As Iran moves to strengthen its presence in international commerce, Chabahar is increasingly seen as a cornerstone of the country’s maritime strategy, with the potential to serve as a model for the modernization of other Iranian ports.
