WANA (Jul 16) – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva has urged the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to take a clear stance against ongoing U.S. attacks on Iran, warning of their humanitarian and human rights consequences and calling for an explicit condemnation of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure.

 

In a letter addressed to the High Commissioner, Ali Bahreini said the attacks violate the principles of international law and have resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians, while causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure and critical facilities across Iran.

 

The letter cited several examples of damage allegedly caused by U.S. attacks, including sections of the Tehran–Mashhad railway, a drinking water production facility in Dehloran, grain silos in Hoveyzeh and Dasht-e Azadegan, fishing vessels operating in southern Iran, missile strikes near Baqaei Hospital in Ahvaz, and Semnan Airport.

 

Bahreini also expressed regret over what he described as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ failure to condemn the recent attacks. He argued that, at a time when the territorial integrity of a UN member state has been violated and civilians continue to suffer the consequences, the absence of a clear, timely, and decisive response could create the impression of a selective approach to the protection of human rights and the enforcement of international law.
