WANA (Jan 30) – Iran’s Chief Justice has strongly criticized the European Union’s decision to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, describing the move as politically motivated, hostile, and contrary to fundamental principles of international law.

Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei  said the IRGC is an official institution within the structure of the Islamic Republic of Iran and part of the armed forces of a UN member state. Labeling an official state institution as “terrorist,” he stressed, is incompatible with international law and violates established legal norms governing relations between states.

Mohseni Ejei pointed to the IRGC’s role in counterterrorism efforts across the region, stating that the force has been at the forefront of the fight against regional and international terrorism in recent years. He added that its contribution to confronting groups such as ISIS is a matter of record and should not be ignored, including by European countries that have directly benefited from these efforts.

The Chief Justice described the EU’s decision as a reflection of political alignment with the policies of the United States and Israel, arguing that such positions undermine Europe’s claim to independence in foreign policy.

He noted that it is unsurprising for countries that, in his words, have maintained overt or covert ties with violent extremist groups to target what he called one of the world’s most effective anti-terrorism institutions.

Mohseni Ejei warned that the EU’s action would not go unanswered, emphasizing that its political and legal consequences would ultimately fall on those who initiated it. He described the move as a violation of the principles of state immunity and international peace and security, and further evidence of the European Union’s lack of autonomy in the face of Washington’s policies.

Separately, Iran’s Embassy in Austria issued a statement condemning the EU’s designation of the IRGC as an act of “political hypocrisy” and an “irresponsible provocation.” The embassy said the decision was designed to delegitimize the defensive institutions of an independent country and constituted an affront to Iran’s sovereignty and national dignity.

The statement added that the move exposes what it described as the EU’s alignment with Israel and its supporters in the United States, and undermines the bloc’s credibility as an independent global actor.

According to the embassy, the decision reflects a dangerous doctrine in which power overrides law, a trend that could have broader consequences for international stability and security.
