WANA (Sep 21) – Iran’s Supreme Leader has congratulated the national Greco-Roman wrestling team on winning the 2025 World Championships in Zagreb, praising the athletes, coaches, and managers for bringing joy to the nation and honor to the country.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei wrote in his message: “I congratulate the young Greco-Roman champions. Your determination and hard work, along with your brothers in freestyle wrestling, have brought happiness to the nation and dignity to the country. I pray to God for your continued success and victory, and I extend my praise to the athletes, coaches, and managers.”

The Iranian national Greco-Roman team secured the world title for the second time and after 11 years, reclaiming the top spot with a commanding performance. This achievement came shortly after the national freestyle wrestling team had also won the world championship.

For the first time in Iran’s sporting history, both the freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling teams claimed world titles in the same tournament — a milestone widely regarded as a historic breakthrough for Iranian wrestling.
